The Department of Agriculture (DA) has initiated the construction of the P2.4 billion Small Reservoir Irrigation Project (SRIP) in Dona Remedios Trinidad (DRT) Bulacan, signaling a significant step towards enhancing agricultural practices in the province.
The primary objective of the SRIP is to provide irrigation for 150 hectares of new agricultural areas, extending its positive impact across a vast expanse of 27,828 hectares spanning 17 towns in both Bulacan and Pampanga.
“Four years from now, people of Bulacan and Pampanga will benefit from the Bayabas SRIP—especially our rice and crop producers,” Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. cited.
Enhancing the Lives of Filipino Farmers
The project aligns with the overarching vision of President Ferdinand Marcos to improve the lives of Filipino farmers, reflecting a commitment to sustainable agricultural development.
One of the pivotal aspects of the SRIP is its contribution to farmland and aquacultural livelihoods. By optimizing irrigation, the project seeks to create an environment conducive to robust crop cultivation and aquaculture activities. Additionally, the SRIP aims to address flooding concerns that could potentially disrupt food production, ensuring a more stable and secure agricultural landscape.
Sustainable Components
Secretary Laurel highlighted the project's alignment with renewable energy practices, showcasing a commitment to sustainable infrastructure. The Bayabas SRIP is set to harness solar and hydropower components within its irrigation system to generate electricity. This dual-purpose approach not only enhances agricultural practices but also contributes to the promotion of renewable energy sources, marking a step toward a more environmentally conscious and efficient farming ecosystem.
As the Bayabas SRIP unfolds, it stands as a testament to the government's dedication to advancing agricultural practices, fostering economic growth, and ensuring food security for the Filipino people. The infusion of P2.4 billion into this irrigation project also signifies a strategic investment in the prosperity and resilience of the agricultural sector in Bulacan and beyond.
