10 Metro Manila Cities Record ‘Very Unhealthy’ Air — EMB

Air quality in several parts of Metro Manila has reached unhealthy levels, with 10 cities recording a “very unhealthy” Air Quality Index (AQI), according to the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB).

The DENR-EMB’s latest Air Quality Monitoring Report showed AQI readings of 150 to 200 in Quezon City, Malabon, Mandaluyong, Manila, Marikina, Muntinlupa, Pasay, San Juan, Taguig, and Valenzuela.

Parañaque and Las Piñas recorded even higher AQI levels of 201 to 300, classified as “acutely unhealthy.”

Quezon City Issues Air Quality Advisory

Amid the elevated pollution levels, the Quezon City government issued an Air Quality Advisory urging residents to limit their exposure to outdoor air.

Children, senior citizens, pregnant women, and people with lung or heart conditions are advised to wear face masks and stay indoors as much as possible.

For emergency concerns, residents may contact the city’s Helpline 122.

Meanwhile, Makati, Navotas, and Pateros recorded AQI levels of 101 to 150, classified as “unhealthy for sensitive groups.”

Areas with AQI readings of 51 to 100 are considered “fair,” meaning air quality is generally acceptable, although highly sensitive individuals may still experience health effects.

PM2.5, PM10 Drive Air Pollution

The AQI monitored by the DENR-EMB measures PM2.5 and PM10, two types of particulate matter that can affect respiratory health.

PM2.5 refers to fine particles smaller than 2.5 micrometers. Common sources include vehicle exhaust, industrial emissions, power plants, wildfires, agricultural burning, and other combustion activities.

PM10 consists of particles measuring about 10 micrometers or less and may come from dust, smoke, industrial activities, and other natural and human-made sources.

With several areas recording poor air quality, residents are urged to stay informed about local AQI levels and reduce prolonged outdoor exposure, especially those more vulnerable to the effects of air pollution.
