The International Container Terminal Services Inc. (ICTSI) is building the Luzon International Container Terminal (LICT) in Bauan, Batangas, with completion scheduled for 2028.
Once operational, the LICT will be the largest privately funded maritime port investment in the Philippines.
It will also be the country's second-largest container terminal after the Manila International Container Terminal (MICT).
Expanding country’s capacity
The terminal aims to increase capacity and aid the country's efforts to use renewable energy, especially in Southern Luzon.
The Bauan terminal's capacity to accept mega ships—a global shipping trend that boosts efficiency and lessens environmental impact by reducing emissions per container—will be a crucial feature.
As the nation transitions toward greener energy, LICT intends to address the growing demand for eco-friendly and efficient marine handling solutions.
Construction is anticipated to start in early 2025, adhering to stringent environmental regulations to safeguard the local ecosystem. Engineering and design studies are already underway.
Sustainable shipping
The project will help promote sustainable shipping, according to ICTSI vice president and head of worldwide engineering Nathan Clarke.
“We’re proud to drive positive change by developing a world-class port capable of handling the largest container vessels. This boosts our capacity and helps lead the shift toward a more sustainable shipping industry," he said.
The development of LICT will be based on ICTSI's 36 years of experience running MICT with sustainability measures, such as advanced waste management, circular economy techniques, biodiversity conservation, and decarbonization.
