In the face of adversity, Senator Christopher "Bong" Go, known as Mr. Malasakit, has once again demonstrated his commitment to helping over 2,000 families affected by a recent fire in Barangay 105, Tondo, Manila.
Assistance in Times of Crisis
Senator Go's aid extends beyond material support; he also offers emotional encouragement to those affected. “Noon pa man, pangako ko na kahit saang sulok kayo ng Pilipinas, basta kaya ng aking katawan at panahon — sunog, putok ng bulkan, lindol, bagyo — pupuntahan at tutulungan po namin kayo. Makatulong sa abot ng aming makakaya, makapagbigay ng solusyon sa mga problema, at makapag-iwan ng kaunting ngiti sa panahon ng inyong pagdadalamhati,” he stated. His initiatives, which included distributing grocery packs, water, and other essential items, have provided hope to families who lost their homes.
Modern Solutions for Safety
As a legislator, Go not only offers immediate relief but also focuses on long-term solutions for such disasters. Under his initiative, the Republic Act No. 11589, or the BFP Modernization Act of 2021, aims to modernize the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) through the acquisition of modern equipment and the hiring of additional firefighters. His Senate Bill No. 2451, the Ligtas Pinoy Centers Act, is set to establish Mandatory Evacuation Centers nationwide, providing safe temporary housing for victims of natural disasters.
A Call for a Safer Future
During his visit, Go emphasized the value of life over material possessions. “Mahirap pong masunugan. Masakit masunugan. Tandaan po natin ang gamit po ay nabibili. Ang damit po nalalabhan. Ang pera po’y kikitain. Subalit ang perang kikitain ay hindi po nabibili ang buhay. A lost life is a lost life forever,” he said. He also advised fire victims, especially those with medical issues, to seek assistance from the Malasakit Centers located in major hospitals in Manila, which are ready to help in times of need.
