Pasig Launches 1st Community ER Facility

Pasig City is moving forward with a new healthcare initiative aimed at providing faster medical attention for residents with minor injuries and non-life-threatening conditions. The city government plans to establish its first Community Emergency Room (ER) Facility in District 1 as part of broader efforts to improve access to healthcare while easing the burden on hospital emergency departments.

Mayor Vico Sotto announced that the project already has a completed program of work and an approved budget, signaling the city's readiness to begin implementation. The facility is designed to accommodate patients who require immediate medical care but do not necessarily need treatment in a full-scale hospital emergency room.

Community-Based Healthcare Expansion

During the city's flag-raising ceremony, Sotto explained the purpose of the planned facility.

“If you only have a small injury or a minor illness and do not want to go to a hospital ER, just go to the community ER,” Sotto said.

According to the mayor, the Community ER will initially operate in District 1 as a pilot project. If the concept proves effective, the city government may consider establishing a second facility in District 2 to expand coverage and reach more residents.

The initiative forms part of Pasig's continuing efforts to strengthen local healthcare services. By handling minor medical concerns at the community level, the city hopes to reduce overcrowding in hospital emergency rooms and allow hospitals to focus more resources on critical and severe cases.

Hospital Upgrades and Long-Term Healthcare Plans

Sotto also revealed that the upgrading of the Pasig Hope Medical Center is nearing completion. Once the facility resumes operations, the city intends to begin improvements to the emergency room of the Pasig City General Hospital (PCGH), which has long struggled with congestion and extended waiting times.

“For those who have been there, you know how cramped it is and how long the lines in our ER always are,” Sotto said.

The planned renovation and enhancement of PCGH have been included in the city's 2027 Annual Investment Program and have already been presented to the City Development Council.

Beyond infrastructure projects, the mayor emphasized the need to expand PhilHealth coverage and strengthen partnerships with private healthcare providers. These efforts form part of Pasig's long-term vision of achieving universal healthcare access and ensuring that residents receive timely and quality medical services.

For ordinary Filipinos, particularly Pasig residents, the establishment of a Community ER could mean quicker access to treatment, shorter waiting times in hospitals, and more efficient healthcare delivery. The project also reflects a growing focus among local governments on improving public health systems and making essential medical services more accessible at the community level.
