Pasig Introduces Modular Plastic Housing For Displaced Families

Pasig City is testing a new temporary housing approach using modular units made from recycled plastic, designed to support families who may need to be relocated while community upgrading projects are underway. The initiative is part of the city’s broader effort to manage displacement during ongoing urban redevelopment works.

Temporary Shelter Solution During City Upgrades

Mayor Vico Sotto shared on Monday evening that the modular housing units are intended to serve as short-term accommodation for residents affected by infrastructure improvements in their own communities. He explained that the concept is meant to provide stability for families while redevelopment projects are ongoing.

He added that the sample unit was developed by Evergreen Labs and is capable of being completed in two weeks. Despite being made from recycled plastic, it was described as durable enough for temporary residential use.

Sotto also noted that Pasig has already awarded thousands of lots to Pasigueño families over time. However, he acknowledged that several areas still require physical upgrading, making transitional housing solutions necessary during redevelopment phases.

Sustainable Housing Model Under Observation

The mayor said the modular setup may serve as a practical model for temporary relocation as the city continues improving older communities. The system is being explored as a way to balance redevelopment efforts with the immediate housing needs of affected residents.

Officials from Sweden, Denmark, and Norway, along with representatives from the Nordic Council of Ministers, were present during the presentation of the prototype housing unit, reflecting international attention on the initiative.

The project provides Pasig with a potentially faster relocation option as it advances its community improvement and housing upgrade programs. For residents, it highlights how local governments are beginning to explore more adaptable housing solutions to address displacement challenges that also affect many urban areas across the Philippines.
