The Mimaropa region's National Irrigation Administration (NIA) began building a number of irrigation projects in 2024, highlighted by the Sagana Communal Irrigation System in the province of Oriental Mindoro and the Maliwanag Communal Irrigation System (CIS).
Repairs to the Maliwanag CIS are scheduled, with special attention paid to the protection and diversion dam. The project is anticipated to benefit 47 farmers by irrigating about 64.2 hectares of agricultural land.
The project is scheduled to be completed in September of this year.
Additionally, the Sagana CIS is currently constructing a canal lining that will irrigate around 100 hectares of land, benefiting 46 farmers. It is estimated to finish in August this year.
Expediting the construction
NIA is unwavering in its objective to promote sustainable growth and prosperity in the region's agricultural sector via the combined efforts of all involved parties.
Emphasizing the dedication of NIA and its associates, such as Mharphy Construction & Supply and Lucky Shining Star Development Corp., they streamline the procedure while upholding superior standards.
When finished, the upgraded irrigation systems should greatly benefit local agriculture by allowing farmers to cultivate their land better and profitably.
In addition to meeting the community's immediate agricultural requirements, this project advances the larger goals of fostering food security and rural development in Oriental Mindoro.
Hailed as MIMAROPA's "Food Basket," Oriental Mindoro produces an extensive range of high-value tropical fruits, including marang, rambutan, lansones, mangosteen, durian, and more.
Due to El Niño, Oriental Mindoro is currently experiencing a protracted dry period that has already declared states of calamity for two municipalities: Bulalacao and Mansalay.
According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), El Niño has resulted in agricultural damage and production losses totaling P1.056 billion
