In order to increase coffee production, the town of La Trinidad, Benguet planted 20,000 seedlings as soon as the wet season began this year, according to municipal agriculturist Nida Organo.
The town plans to use technology and plant more trees to boost production of coffee even further.
Community collaboration
According to Organo, some locals saw the promise of coffee as a source of revenue and a market and planted at least 10 trees per person in 2024.
A minimum of 5,000 coffee seedlings were planted last year.
The town had previously set a goal to plant 25,000 trees beginning in 2025 and more during the following four years.
High value industry
According to Organo, coffee is a high-value crop.
Depending on quality, the green beans' farmgate price ranges from PHP350 to PHP480 per kilogram, while the roasted beans' price ranges from PHP800 to PHP1,300.
Despite the fact that the municipality is home to over 700 coffee farmers, the local government unit nonetheless encourages citizens to cultivate the crop on their vacant land.
