The National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) has declared three historic churches in Rizal as National Cultural Treasures (NCTs), a recognition that highlights their historical, cultural, and artistic significance. The churches—Sta. Ursula Parish in Binangonan, Diocesan Shrine and Parish of San Jose in Baras, and St. Jerome Parish Church in Morong—now join a select group of sites that have been acknowledged for their importance in Filipino heritage.
Sta. Ursula Parish: A Heritage of Faith
Built in the 18th century, Sta. Ursula Parish Church in Binangonan has stood as a symbol of the town's rich religious history. Originally founded in 1621 by the Franciscans, it has undergone several transitions in administration, with the Jesuits and Augustinians overseeing it at different points. The church was renovated in 1853, preserving its historic charm. A formal declaration ceremony will take place on March 2, with a Holy Mass led by Antipolo Bishop Ruperto Santos to celebrate the church’s NCT recognition.
Baras Church: A Testament to Filipino Faith
The Diocesan Shrine and Parish of San Jose in Baras, established in 1595, is the oldest Josephian parish in the southern Tagalog mainland. The church was relocated to its present site in 1682, with the current structure completed in 1686. On March 9, Baras will celebrate the church’s recognition as an NCT, marking it as a vital testament to the community’s enduring faith and cultural heritage.
St. Jerome Parish Church: Preserving Morong’s Legacy
St. Jerome Parish Church in Morong, built in 1615 and completed in 1620, has witnessed centuries of history. After a fire destroyed the original church, it was rebuilt, with further renovations in the 1850s. The church’s preservation and its bell tower built by Paete craftsman Bartolome Palatino are key highlights of its historical significance. The official declaration of its NCT status will be announced soon.
