The town of Baler in Aurora is officially the "birthplace of Philippine surfing."
After a bill lapsed into law, Baler has been acknowledged as "one of the premiere surfing sites in the country" and has earned a "significant spot in the history and origin of Philippine surfing" by Republic Act (RA) 11957.
“The State recognizes the role of tourism as a driver of economic growth and development and shall, therefore, pursue policies that cultivate, strengthen and promote the heritage of our tourism destinations,” RA 11957 read.
“Towards this end, it shall endeavor to underscore and feature the historical significance and origins of our world-renowned tourism destinations.”
Oldest surfing site
Although the country is home to several surfing destinations, like Siargao and La Union, Baler is unique in that it is home to the oldest local surfing community in the nation.
In 1972, surfing in Aurora province started when surfer Steve Scott, who was living at Subic Naval Base, traveled to the eastern coast of Luzon with his surfboard and found waves in the undeveloped hamlet of Baler.
Its water variety is partly why it stood the test of time. Baler boasts beaches that would satisfy any surfer's desires.
Baler is home to waves that range in difficulty from mild ones at Sabang Beach to fierce ones at Lindy's Point, which has drawn surfers from across the globe.
Something for everyone
Sabang Beach offers beginner surfers modest waves that are ideal for learning the fundamentals without too much difficulty.
Intermediate surfers can test their abilities and improve by going to Cemento Beach, renowned for its bigger waves and stronger current.
The renowned Charlie's Point, where the Pacific Ocean and the Tibag-Sabang River converge to form a singular point break famous for its fantastic swells, provides experienced surfers with an exhilarating ride on a slightly bigger wave.
The surf is relatively steady throughout the year. From October to April, the north swell brings in the best surf, while waves reach their maximum size and quality between December and January.
Due to the general friendliness of the people, surf schools and board rentals are also widely available. Tutors are also available to assist in abundance.
Although Sabang Beach gets crowded on weekends with students, crowds are never a problem, but regular line-ups occur from time to time.
