Baguio City's traffic management is poised for a significant transformation through the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into its infrastructure. The initiative aims to employ advanced AI algorithms for real-time data analysis, providing traffic managers with the tools to make well-informed decisions and optimize traffic flow within the area.

Mayor Benjamin Magalong envisions the realization of this innovative project by the close of the second quarter in 2024 through ongoing negotiations with the Metro Pacific Tollways Corp. (MPTC).

MPTC's Smart Urban Mobility Project

The MPTC, having secured the original proponent status from the city government, is leading the charge in the Smart Urban Mobility Project. Collaborating with Singapore Technologies Engineering Ltd., the company aims to introduce tailored technology-driven mobility solutions for Baguio City, encompassing the Congestion Charging Scheme, Transport System Management, Smart Parking Management System, and Traffic Management and Enforcement System.

Private vehicles entering congestion areas during peak hours will be subject to fees under the Congestion Charging Scheme. This strategic approach aims to redistribute traffic, promoting the use of public transportation and mitigating congestion in key areas.

The Transport System Management component involves utilizing a dedicated mobile application for accessing transport information. Additionally, a centralized system for fare collection and settlement with public transport operators will streamline operations and support operators in adhering to modernization programs.

The Smart Parking Management System will deploy a mobile application and strategically positioned messaging boards. This system will furnish real-time parking availability information to motorists, facilitating efficient parking management and enabling cashless payments.

Utilizing mobile applications and variable message signage, the Traffic Management and Enforcement System will provide real-time traffic information. Implementation of cashless payments for traffic violation tickets and towing fees is planned, alongside the activation of a GPS-enabled emergency response system to enhance overall road safety.

Addressing Citywide Challenge

The AI-based traffic solutions in Baguio City target congestion during peak hours, providing advantages for both residents and tourists. Residents experience shorter commute times, and tourists benefit from enhanced real-time information and more efficient services, elevating Baguio's attractiveness as a destination.
