In the heart of Barangay San Pedro Cutud, nestled within the City of San Fernando, Pampanga, a solemn tradition unfolds every Good Friday. It is a reenactment of unparalleled devotion, where the passion, suffering, and death of Jesus Christ are vividly portrayed. This sacred event, known as the Cutud Lenten Rites, has deep roots in the local community, echoing back to its humble beginnings in 1955.
Initially, the staging of the Via Crucis, or Way of the Cross, was a modest affair, enacted by amateur volunteer artists within the village. However, in 1962, the landscape of the ceremony shifted dramatically. Artemio Anoza, a fake doctor from Apalit town, sought to embody Christ himself and underwent actual crucifixion as part of the performance. This marked the first instance of a live crucifixion, capturing the attention of both national and international media.
Acts of Profound Penance
Since then, devout believers gather to partake in acts of profound penance. Mostly men, and occasionally women, willingly subject themselves to being nailed to crosses erected on the rice fields. These penitents endure temporary crucifixion, viewing it as a personal journey of atonement for their sins.

Alongside crucifixion, participants engage in alternative acts of sacrifice, such as self-flagellation, carrying wooden crosses, and crawling through public streets.
