Piddig, Ilocos Norte, stole the spotlight at this year’s Tan-ok ni Ilocano Festival, winning the grand prize with a captivating reenactment of the Basi Revolt. Held at the Ferdinand E. Marcos Sports Stadium, the event celebrated Ilocano culture and showcased the town’s rich heritage, while also providing local job opportunities and inspiring pride in the region's history.
A Powerful Reenactment of the Basi Revolt
The centerpiece of Piddig’s performance was the dramatic reenactment of the 1807 Basi Revolt. The revolt, sparked by Spanish control over basi (sugarcane wine), saw the Ilocanos rise up against colonial forces to defend their culture and traditions. Armed with bamboo spears, the people of Piddig fought fiercely, though they were eventually overpowered by Spanish troops. The reenactment vividly portrayed their courage, sacrifice, and resilience, leaving a lasting impression on thousands of viewers both in-person and online. It served as a powerful reminder of the importance of freedom, family, and cultural preservation.
Cultural Pride and Job Creation
Beyond the performances, the Tan-ok ni Ilocano Festival played a significant role in uplifting the local community. It provided job opportunities in areas like event production, choreography, and music, benefiting various sectors. The festival also gave young people a chance to learn about their heritage and connect with their cultural identity, ensuring that the traditions of the past remain alive in the present. This celebration of Ilocano culture fostered a sense of unity and pride within the region.
Awards and Recognition
Piddig’s victory went beyond the grand prize of PHP1 million. The town also won accolades for Best Production Design, Best Choreography, and Best Direction. Other towns like Vintar and Batac received recognition for their unique performances. Individual awards were given to Lance Andrew Wenceslao (Best Male Performer) and Janneli Erica Urnos (Best Female Performer). Governor Matthew Joseph Manotoc reminded everyone that Ilocos Norte’s true wealth lies in its people and their rich cultural heritage.
