The province of Pampanga is well-known for its customs, festivals, and rich culinary legacy. The Sabuaga Festival, held in Santo Tomas, is one of the many festivities that take place in this region, and it is particularly distinctive and vibrant.

Santo Tomas, the smallest municipality in Pampanga, proves it has a lot to contribute to the province's rich festivities with the annual Sabuaga festival. The words "Sabuag" (which means scatter) and "Sampaga" (which means flowers) in Kapampangan are the source of the name.

Religious roots

In 2009, the Sabuaga festival began as the town's commemoration of Jesus Christ's resurrection on Easter Sunday and in memory of His mother, the Blessed Virgin Mary, who never abandoned Him during His crucifixion.

The act of dispersing flowers also represents the Blessed Virgin's victory over Her Son's resurrection following His crucifixion.

The flower and petal dispersal in the streets, which symbolizes the locals' love for their town and their religion, is complemented by street dances and parades. This custom is now deeply ingrained in Pampanga's tourism brochure.

Showcase of local industries

The Sabuaga is a display of the town's several industries, including clay potteries, casket manufacturing, poultry, fishing, car assembly, and others, rather than just a religious or tourism event.

Poultry and fishing are the main agricultural industries emphasized in the festival, stressing the town's vital role in supplying local and regional markets with food.

Vehicle assembly is also included, highlighting Santo Tomas town's versatility and presenting a diverse economy beyond conventional industries.

Pampanga is well-known for its industries that serve the needs of the province and those of other areas, such as the busy metropolis of Metro Manila.

Not just any ordinary event

The Sabuaga Festival in Pampanga is now more than just an event; it's a multifaceted celebration that combines industry, tradition, and community identity.

From the fine skill of manufacturing caskets to the complex workmanship of clay potteries, the event becomes a living representation of Pampanga's economic variety.
