The Department of Science and Technology (DOST)-Calabarzon is thrilled to announce its first-ever hackathon, “Hack4AProgress: Creating Innovative Solutions to Address Local Government Challenges.” Set to take place from September 23 to 25 at Sol Y Viento Hotels and Resorts in Calamba City, this exciting event invites tech enthusiasts to dive into solving real issues faced by communities in Santa Rosa City, Laguna, and Carmona City, Cavite.

What’s a Hackathon?

Think of a hackathon as a creative marathon where programmers and developers come together to brainstorm and build software solutions. In this case, participants will have 48 hours to create minimum viable products (MVPs) that tackle pressing challenges in local governance. By engaging in this collaborative effort, the event aligns with the national vision for Smart and Sustainable Communities.

Key Challenges Awaiting Solutions

The hackathon will address several vital challenges that local government units need to overcome. Participants will focus on creating innovative solutions for:

  • * Smart Health Coordination: Improving how health resources are managed.
  • * Smart Waste Management: Streamlining waste collection and recycling.
  • * Urban Air Quality Monitoring: Tracking and enhancing air quality in cities.
  • * Accident Reporting Tool: Simplifying the process of reporting accidents for better safety.
  • * Real-Time Traffic Violation Detection: Monitoring traffic violations in an efficient manner.

These areas reflect the immediate needs of communities, and the solutions developed here could lead to meaningful improvements in everyday life.

Eight talented teams from various institutions have been selected to showcase their skills in the final round. Finalists include:

  1. 1. konek.dev – University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB)

“This Hack4AProgress is part of the DOST Calabarzon 2024 Regional Science, Technology, and Innovation Week (RSTIW) celebration in October in Carmona City,” Margallo noted. This event not only aims to foster innovation but also encourages the youth to take part in shaping their communities through technology.
