The long-awaited resumption of passenger ship services between Cebu and Tacloban has finally arrived, offering a new, budget-friendly travel option. On September 11, Roble Shipping Inc. launched its inaugural voyage on the Tacloban-Cebu route with the M/V Claudine Star. This marks the return of passenger ships to Tacloban’s port for the first time since 2008, and the re-establishment of the sea route after a 28-year hiatus.
Improved Travel Options for All
Karina Rosa Tiopes, Eastern Visayas Regional Director of the Department of Tourism (DOT), highlighted that the new service aligns with the DOT’s goals of enhancing travel connectivity, inclusivity, and convenience. “This is really convenient since people don’t have to travel for hours to Ormoc or to the southern part of Leyte to catch a boat trip to Cebu,” Tiopes explained. The service is designed to offer more travel options, making it easier for everyone, including those on a tighter budget.
Historic Maritime Service Returns
The M/V Claudine Star will operate three times a week in each direction, ensuring a reliable and direct connection between Cebu and Tacloban. From Cebu, the ship departs every Friday, Sunday, and Tuesday at 8 p.m., arriving in Tacloban at 7 a.m. the following day. Conversely, from Tacloban, the vessel will set sail every Saturday, Monday, and Wednesday at 2:45 p.m., reaching Cebu at 2 a.m. the next morning. This schedule aims to offer a more convenient and straightforward travel experience, reducing the need for long journeys to other ports.
A Boost to Regional Connectivity
The revival of this sea route is expected to breathe new life into Tacloban’s port, once a bustling maritime hub. The DOT’s initiative not only enhances travel options but also strengthens regional connectivity, providing significant benefits to both local residents and visitors.
