The Philippine Football Federation’s "Football Starts at Home" program is making a significant impact in Negros Oriental and Siquijor, involving 60 to 70 children aged 3 to 6 in a groundbreaking initiative aimed at nurturing future football talent. Launched in late July, this program focuses on grassroots football by integrating parental engagement and home-based training.

Innovative Training Approach

The program's unique approach combines training for young players with active parental involvement. Gerry Lorico from the Negros Oriental-Siquijor Regional Football Association (NOSIRFA) highlights the strategy: “We included parents in the opening seminar, so they can guide their children’s practice at home using provided training videos.” This home-based model ensures that children receive consistent practice and support, crucial for early skill development.

Expert Coaching and Program Goals

To boost the program's effectiveness, the PFF has enlisted American coach Tom Bayer to lead regular clinics and seminars in the regions. This expert coaching is designed to elevate training standards and provide valuable insights into football techniques and strategies. Under the leadership of new PFF president John Gutierrez, the initiative also includes the distribution of size 2 soccer balls tailored for young players, reflecting a broader vision to improve football development by focusing on early-stage talent.

Success and Future Prospects

The program’s impact is already visible through the achievements of young players like Erika Jamio, Charmen Nacion, Zara Danieles, Kelsy Skye Anub, and Alexis Abestano, who recently competed at the 2024 Norway Cup with the Leyte Association of Organized Sports (LAOS FC). Their performance on an international stage underscores the program's potential to cultivate talented footballers who can compete at higher levels. NOSIRFA is optimistic that "Football Starts at Home" will continue to nurture young talent and contribute to the long-term growth of Philippine football, setting the stage for future successes in the sport.
