The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) is set to showcase innovative technologies that promote smarter, safer, and more sustainable communities during the Regional Science and Technology Week (RSTW) in Eastern Visayas from July 15 to 17.
The three-day event will feature an interactive technology exhibit at Robinsons North Tacloban, where at least 20 exhibitors from DOST agencies, academic institutions, local government units, and industry partners will present research breakthroughs, digital solutions, and locally developed innovations.
DOST Eastern Visayas Regional Director John Glenn Ocaña said the exhibit aims to give visitors firsthand experience with science and technology initiatives that can drive regional development and strengthen community resilience.
Digital Tools for Disaster Preparedness
RSTW will also spotlight digital platforms designed to help communities prepare for natural hazards and make informed decisions.
Among these are GeoRiskPH, which provides hazard and risk information for planning and disaster reduction; Project NOAH, which offers flood, rainfall, and hazard monitoring; and the PANaHON mobile app, which delivers real-time weather forecasts, tropical cyclone advisories, and location-based hazard alerts.
The event will also promote HunterPH, a platform that collects and visualizes geospatial and environmental data to support local planning, environmental monitoring, and disaster assessment.
In addition, experts will lead discussions on food security, climate resilience, sustainable energy, and emerging digital technologies.
Innovation for Agriculture and Communities
The agriculture sector will also take center stage with the presentation of the Smarter Approaches to Reinvigorate Agriculture as an Industry in the Philippines (SARAI) program, which provides climate information, crop advisories, drought monitoring, and other decision-support tools for farmers.
Participants will also visit the Sohoton Caves and Natural Bridge in Basey, Samar, to see how science and technology are being used to promote sustainable tourism and community-based livelihoods.
According to Ocaña, the site visit will allow participants to observe how local innovations and responsible resource management contribute to inclusive and sustainable regional development.
RSTW is part of the annual National Science, Technology, and Innovation Week celebration, which promotes the adoption and practical use of technologies developed by the country's scientific community.
