Large-scale waterfront development projects will now be possible as a compromise has been struck between the city government of Cebu and the local port authority.

Acting Mayor Raymond Alvin Garcia stated at a press conference that the court will get the compromised agreement about the ownership dispute over Compañía Maritima and its surrounding areas. The agreement was signed by the Cebu City government and the Cebu Port Authority.

Planned development projects

Each entity's duties in overseeing the development projects are laid out in the compromise agreement.

The interim mayor did not disclose the specifics of the deal but did say that the action will lead to more construction at Compañía Maritima, bringing the idea of converting Puso Village into a "night market."

“We will develop them, first, for tourism purposes, then for economic purposes,” Garcia said, adding that it should stimulate local and foreign tourism.

Converting it for tourism

The agreement will be submitted despite a court injunction about improvements to the Compaña Maritima, such as in the areas of the Puso Village and parking.

The LGU also suggested converting parts of the Compañía Maritima structure into al fresco dining halls.

“What was agreed upon…was that we will not discuss or dispute ownership. It is already in court. What has been agreed upon is the development of the three properties Compañía, Puso Village, and the mechanical parking area,” he said in Cebuano.
