The provincial government of Samar has officially launched “Pamatron,” a fiesta-stay tourism program aimed at giving visitors a more immersive way to experience local celebrations. The initiative was rolled out in Matuguinao ahead of its town fiesta on May 19, positioning festivals not just as events to observe, but as cultural experiences to live through.
Fiestas as Community Experiences
Pamatron is built on the idea of turning tourists into active participants in Samar’s cultural life. Rather than simply attending festivities, visitors are encouraged to join in traditions, experience local cuisine, observe religious practices, and engage with residents throughout the fiesta period.
Provincial tourism officials said the program is part of a broader effort to strengthen cultural tourism by packaging local fiestas into structured travel experiences. It is also expected to support local economies by creating income opportunities for host communities through longer and deeper tourist stays.
Structured Fiesta Journey
The program allows visitors to stay for three days up to one week, covering the full cycle of fiesta activities from preparation to post-celebration.
It is divided into three phases: “Ante and Vesperas,” which highlights community preparations and traditional cooking; “Kaadlawan,” the main celebration featuring religious and cultural events; and “Liwas,” which extends the experience through heritage tours, crafts, and nature-based activities after the fiesta.
Officials said the model can be adopted by any city or municipality in Samar, with each locality showcasing its own patron saint traditions, cuisine, dances, and cultural identity.
Matuguinao Pilot and Tourism Direction
The pilot launch took place in Matuguinao, a 5th-class municipality with a population of just over 7,000. Once associated with security concerns, local leaders are now working to reposition the town as a developing destination for community-based tourism.
Mayor Aran Boller said the initiative helps reintroduce Matuguinao as a safe and welcoming destination while opening livelihood opportunities for residents.
Tourism officials emphasized that Pamatron is part of the province’s “Samar Fiestas: One Province, Many Celebrations” campaign, which promotes year-round cultural tourism across municipalities. The provincial government expressed optimism that the program will help position Samar as a cultural tourism hub in Eastern Visayas while preserving local traditions for future generations.
