Cebu is entering its final stretch of preparations for the 48th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit, as government officials call on the public to remain cooperative and disciplined ahead of the arrival of global leaders. The province is set to host key meetings this week, placing it at the center of regional discussions on pressing international and economic concerns.
As the summit approaches, local authorities are emphasizing the importance of community participation in ensuring a smooth and secure event. Cebu Governor Pamela Baricuatro highlighted the province’s role as the only host outside Metro Manila for the Heads of State meeting scheduled on May 7–8, urging residents to show hospitality while remaining patient amid expected disruptions.
“This is a golden opportunity to shine Cebu’s hospitality, culture, and organizational excellence on the world stage,” the governor emphasized.
Focus Shifts to Urgent Regional Challenges
Beyond logistics, this year’s ASEAN Summit carries heightened significance as leaders are expected to tackle urgent global issues, including the ongoing Middle East conflict and its ripple effects on the region. Malacañang said the agenda has been recalibrated to address energy security concerns and coordinated responses to economic pressures affecting member states.
Officials noted that discussions will center on stabilizing supply chains, mitigating rising energy costs, and ensuring food security across Southeast Asia. The summit is also expected to highlight the need for safe mobility of ASEAN nationals and stronger regional cooperation in times of crisis.
“With the impact of the Middle East tension bearing heavily on Asia, upon the initiative of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., the leaders have refocused the agenda to include discussions on energy security and a unified response to mitigate negative effects on individual member states,” Presidential Communications Secretary Dave Gomez expressed at a press briefing in Cebu.
Regional leaders have opted for a more focused and streamlined summit format, prioritizing critical issues over ceremonial elements. This approach underscores the urgency of addressing geopolitical tensions and their direct impact on economies across Asia.
Security, Infrastructure, and Readiness in Place
On the ground, preparations in Cebu have intensified, with national and local agencies working under the National Organizing Council–Cebu Organizing Committee to meet operational demands. Security measures are now in full implementation, with coordinated efforts among various agencies to ensure the safety of delegates and the public.
“Security preparations are now in full swing, with continuous coordination among agencies and local partners,” ASEAN Summit National Organizing Council Director General Ma. Hellen De La Vega stated.
Authorities have deployed specialized vehicles, including bulletproof transport for visiting leaders, while personnel continue undergoing advanced training. Measures are also in place to address evolving risks, including cybersecurity threats.
Infrastructure improvements across Metro Cebu, such as road rehabilitation, lighting upgrades, and safety installations, have been completed to support mobility during the summit. Key venues like the Mactan Expo will host major activities, while the Mactan-Cebu International Airport has conducted simulation exercises to streamline arrivals.
“Congratulations, Cebu. Napaka-miraculous ninyo talaga (you are truly miraculous),” De La Vega remarked.
A region-wide gun ban has also been enforced from 12:01 a.m. on May 4, 2026, until 11:59 p.m. on May 11, 2026, covering Cebu City, Mandaue City, Lapu-Lapu City, and the entire province. Only authorized uniformed personnel are permitted to carry firearms during this period.
