Kalanggaman Island Enters World’s Top 25 Beaches for 2026

Kalanggaman Island in Palompon, Leyte has secured a spot among the world’s best coastal destinations after ranking 25th in the World’s 50 Best Beaches list for 2026. The recognition places the island alongside El Nido’s Entalula Beach, making them the only two Philippine entries in this year’s global ranking, with Entalula topping the list.

The annual selection is curated by travel professionals who assess beaches based on authenticity, natural beauty, and environmental condition rather than popularity. Judges praised Kalanggaman for its unspoiled landscape, highlighting its signature white sandbar stretching into clear blue waters.

Kalanggaman Island, located in Palompon, Leyte, is widely known for its long, narrow sandbar that appears to float in the sea during low tide, making it one of the most recognizable natural attractions in Eastern Visayas.

Strict Conservation Measures Behind the Success

Local officials credited Kalanggaman’s global recognition to strict environmental protection policies and community cooperation. Palompon Mayor Mary Dominique Oñate described the achievement as a “proud moment,” emphasizing the town’s long-standing commitment to conservation.

To preserve the island’s fragile ecosystem, the local government enforces a daily visitor limit of 500 tourists. This measure is intended to prevent overcrowding and protect marine life, coral reefs, and the island’s powdery white sand.

Oñate said the recognition reflects the dedication of the community in maintaining Kalanggaman’s natural state, even as it gains international attention.

Rising Tourism Interest and Sustainability Focus

The Department of Tourism in Eastern Visayas welcomed the development, saying it validates the long-held appreciation locals have for the island’s natural beauty. Officials expect the global ranking to further boost tourism interest in the region.

Regional Director Karina Rosa Tiopes said the recognition brings both opportunity and responsibility, stressing the need for stronger sustainability efforts as visitor numbers increase.

She noted that Kalanggaman’s limited infrastructure and boat-only access have helped preserve its condition, but added that continued careful management will be essential to maintain its world-class status.
