Iloilo celebrated the 51st Paraw Regatta Festival from February 25 to March 2, 2024. This weeklong event featured a diverse range of activities as Iloilo paid homage to the indigenous paraw, deeply embedded in the region’s maritime history, which originated in 1973. Combined with history, dance, and music, echoing unity among Ilonggos, the festival ensures that these traditional vessels remain an integral part of Ilonggo heritage.
Sailboat Race
This year, the 51st edition took place at Sto. Nino Sur, Arevalo, Iloilo City, marking the longest and biggest sailing competition in Southeast Asia. Sailors from across Western Visayas competed in the Paraw Main Race, covering a challenging 30-kilometer course from Villa Beach in the Arevalo district to Guimaras Island and back. Beyond the race, the festival treated visitors to a vibrant display of painted "paraws" and highlighted the city's tradition through various cultural events.
Artistry and Craftsmanship
Local artists displayed their talent in the Pinta Tawo competition, transforming human canvases into living masterpieces. The theme, "In the Waves of Change," was creatively interpreted, celebrating art, beauty, and self-expression. The Pinta Layag competition and the Miniature Paraw Exhibit added color to the festivities, reflecting the maritime heritage of the region.
Environmental Conservation
The festival also had a strong focus on environmental conservation. Beach clean-ups were conducted, aligning with initiatives to revive the Batiano River. The ILIG Batiano group was launched to raise awareness about the river's current state and gather support for conservation efforts.
Grand Finale
The festival concluded with a breathtaking display of fireworks at night, accompanied by the dazzling illumination of "paraws" that glowed over the waters. Mayor Jerry P. Trenas described the event as one of the most successful editions of the Iloilo-Guimaras Paraw Regatta Festival, emphasizing its significance as a testament to the enduring Ilonggo spirit and symbolizing Iloilo City’s journey marked by challenges and triumphs
