The latest agricultural and fisheries report from the Philippine Statistics Authority reveals that the seaweed industry has emerged as a frontrunner in Central Visayas, outshining other sectors in fisheries in terms of crop production volume. Standing out as the top commodity in the aquaculture fisheries subsector, seaweed boasts an impressive production volume of 13.22 thousand metric tons in the region.

Northern Cebu takes center stage as the center of the region's seaweed industry, housing key seaweed farms in Bantayan, Santa Fe, and Madridejos. Additionally, portions of Bohol contribute to the robust seaweed production, establishing Central Visayas as the second-largest seaweed farming area in the Visayas and a major player on the national stage.

BFAR-7: Nurturing the Growth of Seaweed Industry

The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources in Region 7 (BFAR-7) has played a pivotal role in propelling the Central Visayas seaweed industry to new heights. Through hands-on training sessions and infrastructure development, BFAR-7 empowers seaweed growers and fisherfolk alike, fostering sustainable practices and boosting livelihoods.

BFAR-7's commitment to the seaweed industry is evident in the extensive assistance provided to the community. In 2023 alone, BFAR-7 extended a staggering P12 million in support, encompassing seedlings, small pump boats, seaweed nets, and other essential materials for cultivation.

With an eye on expansion, BFAR-7 strategically distributed 122 propagule units for seaweed nursery and grow-out seaweed. The agency gave 118 units  to northern Cebu, reinforcing the region's status as a seaweed powerhouse. Four units found their way to Bohol, signaling BFAR-7's commitment to broadening the horizons of seaweed farming across the region.

BFAR-7 doesn't stop at providing physical resources. The bureau offers comprehensive programs to enhance the skills and capabilities of seaweed farmers. Theoretical training and practical fieldwork cover cultural methods, good practices, and cooperative management. By facilitating the formation of associations, BFAR-7 strengthens the sense of community among seaweed farmers.

Charting the Future: BFAR-7's Vision for Seaweed Industry

As the seaweed industry in Central Visayas continues to flourish, BFAR-7 is actively shaping its future. Plans include increasing the production capacity of regional seaweed laboratories, establishing more seaweed nurseries, intensifying capability training programs, and identifying new sites for seaweed farming. With BFAR-7 at the helm, Central Visayas is set to remain a major player in the national seaweed industry, blending sustainability with economic prosperity.
