Surigao City is basking in pride as it celebrates the extraordinary achievement of local boxing champion Vencent “The Venom” Lacar, who recently claimed the unified WBO Oriental and WBC Far East Flyweight titles. Lacar’s victory, which came after an exciting fight against Chinese Olympian Bin Lu on December 28, 2024, at the Wuyuan River Stadium in Haikou, China, has made history and lifted the spirits of the entire community.

A Victory to Remember

Lacar’s performance in the ring was nothing short of spectacular. Despite facing a highly skilled and experienced opponent in Bin Lu, Lacar showcased his boxing prowess, earning a split decision win with scores of 96-94 and 97-93 in his favor. Though one judge had it 94-96 for Lu, the result was clear: Lacar had outclassed his opponent. His victory was a true testament to his hard work, discipline, and determination, making his triumph even sweeter for his supporters back home.

Surigao City Honors Lacar’s Achievement

In recognition of Lacar’s historic achievement, Surigao City held a heartwarming ceremony at city hall to honor him and his team. Mayor Pablo Yves Dumlao II and Vice Mayor Alfonso Casurra presented Lacar and his coaching staff with Certificates of Recognition. “This is a proud moment for Surigao City. Vencent’s dedication and success inspire every Batang Surigaonon to pursue their dreams and reach for greatness,” said Mayor Dumlao, highlighting Lacar’s impact on the city’s youth.

Lacar’s training team, including trainer Ariel Lodovice, coach Joay Lopez, and Alpha Fight Club Gym head Eldrich Cloyd Garcia, also received accolades for their essential role in preparing Lacar for the world title fight.

Community Pride and Support

Lacar’s victory is especially meaningful for the local Indigenous Peoples (IP) community in Bolhoon, San Miguel, Surigao del Sur, where he grew up. Datu Rico Maca, IP Mandatory Representative of San Miguel, proudly spoke of Lacar’s roots and his strong connection to the community. Although Lacar’s family is not part of the Manobo tribe, many of his relatives are married to members of the local indigenous community, further strengthening his bond with the area.
