The Dinagyang Festival in Iloilo has always been a vibrant celebration of culture, faith, and unity. With the success of its 2025 festivities this Sunday, the festival is now set to step onto the global stage. From stunning performances to its deep cultural significance, this year’s Dinagyang marks the beginning of its journey to international acclaim.
Dinagyang to Perform in Auckland, New Zealand
In an exciting announcement made during the Tribes Competition, Allan Ryan Tan, president of the Iloilo Festival Foundation, revealed that Dinagyang would soon make its international debut. The festival will perform in Auckland, New Zealand, in November, providing both locals and international audiences the chance to experience Iloilo’s rich cultural heritage up close.
“We are beyond excited to showcase the resilience and spirit of the Dinagyang warriors to the world,” Tan shared in his speech. “Dinagyang is more than just a festival—it’s a reflection of the strength and enduring spirit of the people of Iloilo,” he added.
A Global Milestone: World Expo 2025 in Osaka, Japan
In addition to Auckland, Dinagyang has also been invited to participate in the World Expo 2025 in Osaka, Japan. This prestigious invitation, revealed by Crisanta Marlene Rodriguez from the Department of Tourism-Western Visayas, signals the festival’s growing international stature.
Tan underscored how important this milestone is, saying, “The partnership between the city and province of Iloilo has been the driving force behind Dinagyang’s success. Our participation in the World Expo will showcase Iloilo’s rich cultural identity and elevate the festival’s global presence.”
Dinagyang’s Spirit Lives On
The Dinagyang Festival, held every fourth Sunday of January, honors the Sto. Niño (Child Jesus) and celebrates the heritage of Iloilo. This year, eight tribes competed in the Tribes Competition, each offering mesmerizing performances that highlighted Iloilo’s cultural diversity and history. Among the standout tribes were Tribu Paghidaet, Tribu Salognon, and Tribu Ilonganon, each delivering vibrant displays that captivated audiences.
Mayor Jerry Treñas of Iloilo City also expressed his pride in the festival’s success, urging the community to keep the Dinagyang spirit alive. "Let’s continue to unite and show the world what Iloilo is made of," he said. His message reinforced the festival’s deeper purpose: to bring people together through cultural pride and showcase Iloilo as a city of tradition, creativity, and resilience.
