PNP, LGUs To Roll Out Designated Firecracker Zones For New Year

Local governments across the Philippines are once again enforcing designated firecracker zones for New Year celebrations. These controlled areas are intended to reduce injuries, property damage, and accidental fires, while still allowing Filipinos to enjoy traditional fireworks displays. The Philippine National Police (PNP) has directed all police chiefs to coordinate with local government units (LGUs) to identify safe locations and set allowable selling periods for firecrackers and pyrotechnic materials.

Proper Regulation and Monitoring

Acting PNP Chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. emphasized that concentrating sales in specific areas allows authorities to better monitor vendors and products, ultimately reducing risks to the public.

“The main purpose is proper regulation and public safety. By designating a specific area in every town or city where people could buy firecrackers and pyrotechnic materials, we can easily monitor and prevent the selling of illegal firecrackers,” Nartatez said in a statement on Friday, Dec. 26.

Authorities remind the public that lighting firecrackers outside approved zones may lead to fines or confiscation. By centralizing sales and use, officials can more closely monitor vendors, ensure only legal products are sold, and quickly respond to any emergency situations, significantly lowering the risk of accidents in residential areas.

How Designated Firecracker Zones Work

Firecracker zones are usually set up in open spaces such as town plazas, vacant lots, covered courts, or sports complexes, where large crowds can safely gather. Police officers, fire trucks, and medical responders are stationed in or near these zones, ready to intervene in case of incidents. Vendors are strictly inspected to ensure all fireworks meet safety standards, while any sales outside these areas are considered unauthorized.

By concentrating celebrations in controlled spaces, authorities also aim to curb illegal or homemade firecrackers, which are a major source of injuries during the holiday season. The zones provide an opportunity for communities to enjoy festive activities in a safer environment while reducing unnecessary strain on local hospitals and emergency services.

Staying Safe While Celebrating the New Year

Residents are encouraged to follow safety reminders, including supervising children at all times, keeping a safe distance from firecrackers, and avoiding illegal or oversized pyrotechnics. Many LGUs also organize community fireworks shows or demonstrations, which provide a safe alternative to personal fireworks use.

Health officials continue to warn that even small firecrackers can cause severe injuries to the hands, face, and eyes. By respecting designated zones and safety guidelines, Filipinos can enjoy the festivities while helping ensure a peaceful, injury-free start to the New Year. Responsible celebrations not only protect individuals and families but also help preserve public safety and community well-being.
