The Philippines has earned international recognition as Asia’s Best Retirement Destination at the 11th TripZilla Excellence Awards, a milestone the Department of Tourism (DOT) says reflects the country’s growing appeal as a long-term haven for retirees. Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia-Frasco welcomed the award, noting that it signals global confidence in the Philippines not only as a travel spot but as a place to settle down.

Welcoming Communities and Retirement Incentives

“This award affirms what the global community increasingly sees; the Philippines is not only a beautiful place to visit but also a place to call home,” Frasco said on Monday. She highlighted that retirees are drawn to the country for more than its scenic landscapes, citing Filipino warmth and hospitality as central reasons why the nation stands out. “Retirees choose the Philippines because the warmth of our country transcends our destinations and is deeply rooted in our culture of care, hospitality, and compassion,” she added.

Frasco emphasized that the DOT will use this recognition as motivation to further improve programs and services that ensure comfort, dignity, and well-being for retirees. The agency continues to collaborate with the Philippine Retirement Authority (PRA) to enhance the competitiveness and international appeal of retirement tourism. Key factors that make the Philippines an attractive choice include its English-speaking population, friendly communities, favorable climate, and world-class healthcare facilities.

This appeal is reinforced by the Special Resident Retiree’s Visa program, which currently counts over 83,000 holders. Efforts such as the PRA’s “We Care” campaign are also helping the country expand its share in the global retirement market. Visitors can increasingly notice the growing presence of foreign retirees in local communities, coastal towns, and popular tourist destinations, which has a direct positive effect on local businesses and tourism-driven economies.

A Boost for Local Tourism and the Economy

The rise of foreign retirees is not only a sign of the country’s global recognition but also an economic opportunity for the Philippines. Retirees contribute to tourism, housing, healthcare, and service sectors, providing steady income and employment. For the average Filipino, this translates to more vibrant local economies, job opportunities, and the continued development of infrastructure that benefits both residents and visitors alike.

With the award, the Philippines reinforces its reputation as a welcoming and sustainable destination for long-term stays, highlighting how culture, hospitality, and natural beauty can together create a world-class retirement experience.
