EJ Obiena once again proved why he’s one of Southeast Asia’s top athletes, claiming his fourth men’s pole vault gold at the 2025 Southeast Asian Games on Tuesday, December 16, at Supachalasai Stadium in Bangkok. In a nail-biting contest, Obiena and Thailand’s Amsamang Patsapong both cleared a new Games record of 5.70 meters. Through a countback, Obiena secured the gold after Patsapong missed his first two attempts. Fellow Filipino Elijah Cole completed the podium with a bronze at 5.20 meters.
“It’s too close for comfort,” Obiena admitted after his victory. Both athletes surpassed the previous SEA Games record of 5.65 meters, which Obiena himself set in Cambodia 2023.
Philippines’ Overall Medal Tally
As of Tuesday, the Philippines had 28 golds, 44 silvers, and 90 bronzes in the 2025 SEA Games across all sports. Highlights from earlier in the Games include gold medals in gymnastics, swimming, taekwondo, judo, wushu, and practical shooting, showcasing the country’s depth of talent.
Consistency and Resilience on Display
Obiena’s performance reflects not only his exceptional skill but also his mental toughness, cementing his status as a regional athletics powerhouse. Beyond personal triumph, his victory underscores the Philippines’ rising prominence in Southeast Asian sports. With their impressive performances, Filipino athletes have built strong momentum, inspiring fans and setting the stage for even more medal-winning moments in the remaining events of the SEA Games.
