In an impressive showcase of talent and hard work, Filipino “mathletes” have achieved remarkable success at the 21st International Mathematics and Science Olympiad (IMSO) held in Wenzhou, China. Earning a total of 19 medals, this achievement highlights the Philippines' increasing prominence in mathematics and science on the global stage.
From October 1 to 6, nearly 300 talented students from 18 countries–including Botswana, Bulgaria, and China–gathered in Wenzhou for the competition. The Philippine team excelled, winning 1 gold, 10 silver, and 8 bronze medals. A standout performance came from Heal Job Esio–a Grade 6 student from Pangasinan Universal Institute–who secured the gold medal, exemplifying the remarkable capabilities of Filipino youth.
A Talented and Diverse Team
The Philippine team's success was not limited to the gold medal. Silver medalists included Elizur Daniel Anabieza from Divine Light Academy and Bianca Jayne Ong and Annette Tiffany Yu from St. John's Institute Bacolod. Bronze medalists hailed from various institutions, including St. Jude Catholic School and Timoteo Paez Elementary School, showcasing a rich array of talent across the nation. Their collective success reflects a strong commitment to mathematics education in the Philippines.
Fostering Future Talent
The Mathematics Trainers' Guild Philippines (MTG) has been instrumental in this achievement. Established in 1995, MTG is dedicated to improving math education and nurturing young talent through its extensive network of over 60 training centers nationwide. Dr. Simon Chua, head of MTG, expressed pride in the students' accomplishments, noting how their success inspires not only themselves but also their families and communities. As these young mathematicians continue to excel, they are paving the way for future generations to explore opportunities in STEM fields and contribute to the nation's legacy of excellence.
