Gymnast Carlos Edriel Yulo, who won two gold medals in the Summer Olympics in Paris in 2024, has joined the Philippine Navy Reserve Force. The world-class gymnast was ranked as a Petty Officer 1st Class (PO1).
Yulo took his oath at the PN headquarters in Naval Station Jose Andrada under the supervision of Maj. Gen. Joseph Ferrous Cuison, head of Naval Reserve Command, who was representing Navy chief Vice Admiral Toribio Adaci Jr., according to a news release from Navy spokesperson Commander John Percie Alcos.
Confident on Yulo
Major General Cuison conveyed a message from Vice Admiral Adaci, who expressed confidence in Yulo's dedication to his new position.
"We know that when you commit to something, you give it your all," the message read. "I am confident you will do the same as a reservist, standing alongside men and women who dedicate their lives to protecting and uplifting our nation."
Yulo's appointment to the Navy Reserve Force occurs at a time when the Philippines is actively enhancing its military prowess and enlisting well-known individuals in national service.
Life of a reservist
As a reservist, Yulo will continue his sporting career while taking part in training exercises and possibly being called upon to help during national emergencies.
Yulo, 24, received millions in cash incentives and other benefits after winning two gold medals at the Olympics.
Previously, Yulo was also given the Presidential Medal of Merit by President Ferdinand Marcos, which is one of the highest honors bestowed upon Filipinos for their achievements in the fields of athletics, literature, science, the arts, or entertainment.
