The Philippines has broken into the top 50 of the 2025 Global Innovation Index (GII), securing the 50th spot and climbing three notches from last year’s ranking. The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) said this achievement highlights the growing role of science, technology, and innovation in shaping the country’s future.

The country has shown consistent progress in recent years, ranking 59th in 2022 and 56th in 2023. Compiled annually by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) together with global knowledge partners, the GII evaluates more than 139 economies based on human capital, research and development (R&D) institutions, and innovation outputs.

DOST at the Helm of Innovation

DOST Secretary Renato Solidum Jr. stressed that science, technology, and innovation should provide solutions and opportunities for every Filipino. He emphasized that the DOST’s mission is to ensure that research leads to real products, services, and industries that improve quality of life.

Over the past three years, the DOST has funded over 3,000 R&D projects nationwide, addressing national priorities such as climate resilience, health technologies, digital transformation, and advanced manufacturing. The agency has also supported more than 45,000 undergraduate and graduate scholars, while the Philippine Science High School System continues to nurture over 6,000 young innovators annually.

Strengthening Partnerships for Progress

To accelerate the impact of innovation, the DOST works hand-in-hand with industry. In partnership with the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI), the agency co-leads the DOST-PCCI Business Technology Hub, a platform that matches technologies with industry needs and promotes commercialization.

With this milestone, the Philippines reaffirms its ambition to become a rising hub of innovation in the global arena—demonstrating that collaboration across government, academia, and industry can drive national progress.
