The government is increasing fuel assistance for public utility vehicle (PUV) drivers, with the new P12-per-liter subsidy set to take effect on Saturday, August 15.
The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) said qualified public utility jeepney (PUJ) and UV Express drivers and operators could save as much as P1,800 per week through the program.
The new subsidy is P2 higher than the P10-per-liter assistance introduced in April.
Move Aims to Ease Impact of Middle East Crisis
Executive Secretary Ralph Recto said the increase was prompted by the effects of the ongoing Middle East crisis on fuel prices.
The additional assistance is intended to help transport workers manage higher operating costs and provide some protection against fuel price volatility.
Other Relief Measures Remain in Place
The higher subsidy comes after local fuel prices dropped by more than P4 per liter for the August 11 to 17 pricing period, offering motorists some temporary relief.
Meanwhile, the Department of Social Welfare and Development has been directed to continue the Unified Package for Livelihoods, Industry, Food, and Transport (UPLIFT) program.
The government’s relief efforts seek to support workers, businesses, and other sectors affected by the economic impact of tensions in the Middle East.
