The Philippines and India have signed a series of agreements to strengthen cooperation in defense, maritime security, and trade, marking a significant step forward in their growing strategic partnership.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi witnessed the signing of several bilateral documents during Marcos’ state visit to New Delhi, with the aim of deepening ties amid regional tensions and global economic shifts.
Maritime, Defense Ties in Focus
Among the key pacts is a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the Department of National Defense of the Philippines and India’s Ministry of Defence. The agreement is expected to boost military training, capacity building, and cooperation on maritime domain awareness in the Indo-Pacific region.
“The Philippines looks at India as a dependable partner in regional security,” Marcos said during the joint press briefing.
In addition to the defense deal, the two countries also signed an MOU on enhanced maritime cooperation, which includes information sharing and coordination between coast guards. This comes at a time when tensions in the South China Sea remain high, with Manila seeking stronger ties with like-minded nations.

Economic Engagement Also Ramps Up
Beyond defense, Marcos and Modi agreed to expand trade and economic exchanges, targeting areas such as pharmaceuticals, digital infrastructure, and agriculture. India has emerged as a key non-traditional partner for the Philippines, especially in technology and development cooperation.
“India stands ready to work closely with the Philippines in building resilient supply chains and inclusive growth,” Modi said.
The leaders also reaffirmed their shared commitment to upholding international law, particularly the 1982 UNCLOS, which both countries cited as a framework for resolving maritime disputes peacefully.
Strengthening Alliances in a Shifting Region
The agreements signed reflect Manila’s broader strategy of diversifying its security and economic partnerships amid rising tensions with China and shifting alliances in the Indo-Pacific.
As the Philippines continues to fortify its defense posture and economic resilience, partnerships like the one with India provide both strategic depth and developmental opportunities. With shared democratic values and common maritime concerns, the PH-India alliance signals a maturing relationship grounded in mutual interests.
This latest development marks not just stronger bilateral ties but also a move toward a more stable, cooperative Indo-Pacific—where the Philippines plays a proactive and increasingly influential role.
