Senator Erwin Tulfo has urged financial technology companies to remove online gambling links from their digital platforms, framing it as a matter of corporate and social responsibility. His appeal comes ahead of Senate hearings on bills seeking a total ban on online gambling in the Philippines.

Tulfo, who chairs the Senate Committee on Games and Amusement, emphasized that firms like GCash and PayMaya should act even before being compelled by law. “Companies shouldn’t wait for legislation. You have a social responsibility, and we’re already facing a crisis. The online gambling problem is a crisis,” Tulfo said in an interview with ABS-CBN News Channel.

Corporate Accountability Urged

Highlighting the role of corporate accountability, Tulfo challenged these major e-wallet firms to show leadership and initiative.

“If your business is already hurting people, maybe it's time to reinvent. Now, we want to see what you call corporate responsibility—social responsibility. Show us. You're big companies, aren't you?” he said.

Tulfo said the committee will summon fintech companies, relevant government agencies, and stakeholders to discuss the spread of gambling on digital platforms. He also noted the surge of online gambling advertisements on social media, questioning the responsibility of internet apps in protecting vulnerable users.

“Common sense and morality—where do you stand? So many lives are being ruined. These are big companies, even listed on the stock exchange. You used to thrive without online gambling,” he stressed.

The senator’s call reflects mounting public concern over the rise of gambling activities that are now just a few clicks away on smartphones and tablets.

Push for Total Ban

Beyond corporate action, Tulfo remains firm in pushing for legislation to outlaw online gambling entirely, warning of its social consequences.

“Before, we only heard rumors that 4Ps [Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program] money was being gambled away in tong-its. But now, it’s scary to think government aid might be going straight to online gambling,” Tulfo cautioned.

He stressed that the harm caused by online gambling far outweighs any economic gain it might bring. “Huwag na sanang antayin ng mga kumpanya na ito na sabihan pa sila, gagawa ng batas. Isipin nyo na lang, you guys have social responsibilities, and we are facing a crisis,” he added in Filipino.

The upcoming hearings aim to draw a clear line between technology that empowers consumers and services that risk driving them into deeper financial and personal distress.

As the Senate prepares for debate, Tulfo’s call sets the tone: addressing the online gambling issue requires not just regulation but active responsibility from private sector leaders.
