Lacson Fears US-Iran Clash May Trigger Global Conflict

Senator Panfilo “Ping” Lacson has raised alarm over the United States’ recent military strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities, warning that the escalation could spiral into a full-scale global conflict.

The attacks, which took place on June 22, targeted three key Iranian sites—Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan—in what has been described as the most aggressive U.S. action in the region in years. Lacson called the move “unprecedentedly dangerous” and urged Philippine authorities to prepare contingency plans for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in the Middle East.

Lacson emphasized that the situation is no longer limited to a regional issue. He warned that retaliation from Iran, especially if directed toward U.S. allies or military bases in the region, could trigger broader involvement from other nations. This, he said, may disrupt global stability, energy supply chains, and the lives of millions, including Filipinos both abroad and at home.

Current Flashpoints and Global Ripples

Iran has since placed its military on high alert and vowed a “proportionate response.” The targeted facilities reportedly suffered extensive damage, though Iran disputes the full extent.

Tensions have spread beyond Iran’s borders, with concerns rising over potential attacks on U.S. assets in the Middle East and disruptions to the Strait of Hormuz—a vital artery for global oil transport. As a result, global oil prices have surged, and commercial flights have been rerouted to avoid conflict zones.

Several countries, including regional powers, have issued warnings and begun preparations for possible escalation. The United Nations and key global leaders have called for restraint, fearing one miscalculation could set off a chain reaction across multiple fronts.

Philippine Preparations and Possible Impact

The Philippine government is already taking steps to protect its citizens. The Department of Migrant Workers has advised recruitment agencies to suspend deployment to high-risk countries such as Iran, Israel, Lebanon, and Jordan. The Department of Foreign Affairs has activated contingency plans, including evacuation protocols, should the situation worsen. Agencies are also coordinating closely to ensure support and communication with Filipinos on the ground.

Domestically, the government is monitoring global oil markets and inflation risks. A prolonged conflict could lead to spikes in fuel, transport, and commodity prices, directly impacting Filipino households. The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas and other economic agencies are preparing for possible volatility in markets and remittance inflows.

What Filipinos Should Expect

Filipinos, especially those with family working in the Middle East, are encouraged to stay updated through official government advisories. Travelers should register with the DFA’s eTravel system to receive emergency updates. Locally, consumers are advised to prepare for potential price increases in fuel and essential goods. Businesses with international supply chains may also need to revise logistics plans.

Senator Lacson’s warning serves as a timely reminder: in an interconnected world, even conflicts thousands of kilometers away can quickly reach the homes and livelihoods of ordinary Filipinos. Preparedness and vigilance remain key as the situation unfolds.
