As the Philippines confronts a resurgence of mpox (monkeypox) cases, local government units (LGUs) across the nation are intensifying their efforts to contain the virus and protect public health. With confirmed cases spreading mainly in the Visayas and Mindanao regions, LGUs are ramping up surveillance, contact tracing, and community education to prevent further transmission. These coordinated actions aim to safeguard vulnerable populations while minimizing disruptions to daily life.
Nationwide LGU Initiatives
In Cebu City, Mayor Raymond Alvin Garcia has signed an executive order forming an inter-agency task force dedicated to monitoring and managing mpox cases. This task force is responsible for overseeing case monitoring, coordinating with national agencies, and implementing preventive measures. Currently, four suspected mpox cases have been reported in the city, with patients placed in isolation and contact tracing efforts underway.
Beyond Cebu, other LGUs are proactively responding to the mpox threat. In Iloilo City, health authorities have confirmed four laboratory-verified cases and two suspected cases as of June 2, 2025. The City Health Office is conducting thorough investigations and emphasizing the importance of public adherence to health protocols.
In Negros Oriental, Governor Manuel Sagarbarria has formed a task force to prevent the entry and spread of mpox in the province. This team comprises key officials and aims to implement surveillance and preventive measures effectively.
Meanwhile, the Department of Health in Central Visayas (DOH-7) is finalizing protocols to address the rising mpox cases in the region. The department is working closely with local health offices to ensure timely reporting and response.
Current Mpox Situation
The Philippines has reported a total of 911 confirmed mpox (monkeypox) cases since 2024, with data updated as of June 2, 2025. While the overall number of new cases declined in May compared to April, several regions still face active infections.
As of June 2025, mpox cases have been reported across several regions in the Philippines. Central Visayas recorded 7 confirmed cases in Cebu City, Mandaue, Lapu-Lapu, Talisay, and Cebu Province, with most patients having recovered and 1 fatality in Talisay City due to comorbidities.
In Iloilo City, there are 4 confirmed and 2 suspected cases, all currently isolated and under observation to determine possible community transmission. Cabanatuan City previously reported 3 cases, all of whom have fully recovered.
Meanwhile, the Davao Region has 6 active cases spread across Davao City, Davao del Sur, and Compostela in Davao de Oro, with patients in isolation and ongoing contact tracing. South Cotabato has logged 10 confirmed cases, prompting heightened monitoring and renewed calls for public adherence to health protocols.
Internationally, mpox remains a concern, with outbreaks reported in various countries. The World Health Organization (WHO) continues to monitor the situation, especially in regions where the Clade I-b variant is present. Increased global travel has led to heightened surveillance at airports and border crossings to prevent the spread of the virus.
Public Health Guidelines and Preventive Measures
To help prevent the spread of mpox, health authorities advise avoiding close contact with individuals showing symptoms like rashes or lesions, practicing good hygiene through regular hand washing or sanitizer use, and seeking prompt medical attention if symptoms such as fever, swollen lymph nodes, or skin lesions appear.
Staying informed through trusted sources like the DOH and WHO is also crucial. Following these precautions and supporting LGU efforts can significantly reduce transmission and protect public health.
