DepEd Strengthens Student Helpline With Direct Mental Health Hotline Link

The Department of Education (DepEd) has upgraded its Learners TeleSafe Contact Center Helpline by directly linking it to the National Center for Mental Health (NCMH) Crisis Hotline. The move is aimed at giving students faster access to professional help in cases of abuse, bullying, and emotional distress.

DepEd Secretary Sonny Angara led the launch of the enhanced system at the General Tiburcio De Leon National High School in Valenzuela City, stressing the importance of immediate and reliable support for learners in crisis.

“Sa pag-uugnay ng ating #33733 Helpline sa mga dalubhasa mula sa NCMH, inilalapit natin ang kalinga at de-kalidad na healthcare sa bawat mag-aaral,” Angara said, adding that every call should lead to real support for healing, safety, and peace of mind.

Immediate access to crisis intervention and support

Through the upgraded system, calls made to the DepEd helpline can now be automatically routed to NCMH mental health specialists. This allows students in distress to receive prompt crisis intervention without having to navigate multiple referral steps.

The helpline is accessible via #33733 (#DEPED), 0945-175-9777, email at weprotectlearners@deped.gov.ph, and Viber. DepEd said the integration was made possible with the support of PLDT Inc.’s contact center technology.

Officials emphasized that the system is designed to ensure that urgent mental health concerns are addressed quickly and handled by trained professionals.

Broader school-based protection and mental health services

Alongside the helpline, DepEd continues to strengthen its on-the-ground support systems through Learner Rights and Protection Officers who respond to urgent reports and provide initial assessment and guidance.

Many public schools also maintain Learner Support Centers, which combine guidance services, teen spaces, and protection desks to address student concerns more holistically.

In addition, some schools have organized Peer Hubs—student groups trained by MentorHealth Philippines and Ateneo de Manila University—to provide basic peer support and help refer classmates who may need further assistance.

For immediate mental health support, the NCMH Crisis Hotline remains available 24/7 at 1553 or 1800-1888-1553. Mobile users may also reach 0919-057-1553 (SMART/TNT) and 0917-899-8727 (Globe/TM).
