President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has lauded the enduring bond between the Philippines and Japan, expressing optimism about their trilateral agreement with the United States of America (USA), while also emphasizing its potential for bolstering peace in the Indo-Pacific region.

During the presentation of credentials to Marcos at Malacañang Palace on Thursday, April 6, Japanese Ambassador Endo Kazuya was warmly received. The President hailed the current state of relations between the two nations as being "stronger than ever," anticipating further growth under Ambassador Endo's leadership.

Ambassador Endo echoed President Marcos's sentiments, emphasizing the deep historical and traditional ties between the Philippines and Japan, which have only strengthened over time. He highlighted ongoing efforts in various fields, including security and economics, as well as initiatives like the Reciprocal Access Agreement aimed at enhancing cooperation.

The Philippines and Japan marked 67 years of normalized relations in July 2023 and have enjoyed a Strengthened Strategic Partnership since 2011.

Trilateral Agreement and Regional Stability

Marcos underscored the significance of the trilateral agreement between the Philippines, Japan, and the USA as a cornerstone for regional peace and stability. Stressing the importance of collaborative efforts, he emphasized the need to maintain peace and freedom of navigation, particularly in the South China Sea.

Highlighting the multifaceted nature of the trilateral engagements with the USA, the President emphasized the importance of cooperation in defense, economics, and technology. He expressed confidence in these partnerships as vital components for regional prosperity and security.

Japan’s Vital Role and Regional Cooperation

Marcos lauded Japan's substantial assistance to the Philippines, particularly in terms of equipment provision and training. He emphasized the importance of this support, especially when complemented by contributions from other key allies like Australia, South Korea, and the USA.

Japan's role as a reliable partner for the Philippines spans various sectors, including Official Development Assistance (ODA), maritime security, and trade and investments. The President's recent visit to Japan in February 2023, followed by Prime Minister Kishida Fumio's return visit to Manila in November 2023, underscores the commitment to further strengthen bilateral ties.

In addition, the President's participation in the 50th ASEAN-Japan Commemorative Summit in Tokyo last December underscores the commitment to enhancing regional cooperation and stability.
