Mapúa University’s first battery-electric vehicle prototype, the Aguila Neo Electric, successfully passed the technical and safety inspection at the Shell Eco-marathon Asia-Pacific and the Middle East 2026, held at the Lusail International Circuit in Qatar from January 21 to 25.
Developed by Cardinal One, Mapúa’s student-led engineering team, the vehicle marks the university’s debut in the battery-electric prototype category—making it the only Philippine team to compete in this category at the event.
Integrated Systems and Rigorous Pre-Competition Testing
The Aguila Neo Electric integrates key subsystems, including the battery pack, battery management system, motor controller, electric drivetrain, telemetry, braking system, and safety interlocks.
Before competing in Qatar, the team conducted extensive track testing in the Philippines, including at the Batangas Racing Circuit. System validation and low-speed simulations were also carried out to evaluate energy consumption, drivetrain response, system reliability, and safety mechanisms.
To meet strict battery-electric category requirements, the team focused on tribology optimization, emergency shutdown systems, electrical insulation, and structural integrity.
Historic Milestone and Initial Performance Results
Cardinal One said the Aguila Neo Electric passed the technical and safety inspection on the second day of the competition, an unprecedented milestone for the team. The inspection confirmed that the vehicle met Shell Eco-marathon’s stringent safety and operational readiness standards.
During initial runs, the vehicle recorded a mileage performance of 91 km/kWh, highlighting the effectiveness of its energy management strategy, drivetrain efficiency, and system integration—especially notable for the team’s first entry in the battery-electric category.
Next Steps for Future Competitions
Moving forward, the team said it will use inspection feedback, run data, and system performance insights to further improve the vehicle’s efficiency, reliability, and competitiveness in future Shell Eco-marathon events.
