For generations, millions of Filipinos have been tormented by the idea of Pinoy monsters. Every creature, from the lighthearted dwende to the crafty aswang, has distinct qualities and backstories.
Here are some of the mysterious ones in the Philippines’ horror lore.
Tikbalang
This creature, sometimes referred to as the "half man, half horse," misleads tourists and is frequently connected to mountains and forests. However, because of their nefarious nature, they are tricksters rather than frightening creatures.
Dwende
Dwendes are typically characterized as tiny, gregarious creatures that reside in mounds or underground.
They can occasionally be mischievous and cause small annoyances. In the big picture, however, they aren't viewed as particularly dangerous.
Aswang
One of the cornerstones of Pinoy monsters is the aswang. According to legend, it can change its shape and hunt pregnant women to eat them and their unborn children.
Manananggal
As a subspecies of aswang, mananggal also prey on expectant mothers and their unborn children. Their ability to split their bodies, top and bottom, and fly, however, gives them an advantage.
Each creature in the Pinoy monsters universe combines strength, mystery, and terror in a unique way. Their tales continue to influence Filipino folklore and emphasize our cultural identity.
