What is love? In the Filipino-Korean film Mujigae, it’s a mother’s devotion, a father’s perseverance, and an aunt’s surprising sacrifice. This heartwarming film captures the complexity of family ties and how they evolve through healing, patience, and unexpected acts of love. Spoiler alert!
A Mother’s Warmth
The story opens with Mujigae (Ryrie Sophia) and her mother, Rainalyn (Anna Luna), living in the bustling streets of South Korea. Rainalyn, knowing her time with Mujigae is limited, pours her love into preparing her daughter for a future without her, leaving behind videos to guide her after she’s gone.
In contrast, back in the Philippines, we meet hairstylists Sushmita (Donna Cariaga) and Marla (Kate Alejandrino), who discuss their own unique experiences with motherhood—from big families to miscarriages and even adoption.
Across all these stories, the common theme is the unconditional love mothers have for their children.
An Aunt’s Adoration
At the heart of the film is Mujigae’s evolving relationship with her Tita Sunny (Alexa Ilacad). Initially, Sunny is reluctant to care for Mujigae due to her past trauma and a general dislike of children. However, Rainalyn’s death forces her to step into a new role, one she never expected to embrace.
Over time, through her sister’s memory and the bond she forms with Mujigae, Sunny learns to love her niece, even sacrificing her own future to be there for her family. She becomes the second mother Mujigae never anticipated.
A Father’s Perseverance
The film also highlights the strained relationship between Sunny and her father, Tatay Emong (Richard Quan), who left to provide for the family but returned to resentment.
Mujigae’s bond with her own father, Ji Sung (Kim Ji Soo), is similar. Although absent for much of her early life, he returns determined to build a relationship with his daughter while giving thanks to her extended family.
Mujigae beautifully captures the ways in which family members, despite their flaws and mistakes, can find redemption and forge stronger bonds through love and resilience. A solid 4 stars!
Mujigae is now showing in SM Cinemas nationwide.
