As the rainy season sweeps across the Philippines, a concerning trend emerges: a sharp rise in cases of dengue fever. The Department of Health (DOH) is sounding the alarm, urging the public to take caution against this dangerous mosquito-borne illness.

Recent data from the DOH reveals a troubling reality. From the beginning of the year until May 4, a staggering 59,267 cases of dengue have been reported, resulting in 164 deaths. The numbers are even more alarming with 3,634 new cases recorded between April 21 and May 4 alone, indicating a rapid spread of the disease.

Call to Action: Urgent Plea for Preemptive Measures

The Health Secretary, Ted Herbosa, is calling for immediate action in response to this growing crisis. He stresses the importance of taking proactive steps to combat dengue, such as eliminating potential breeding grounds for mosquitoes before the rainy season peaks. Herbosa also emphasizes simple yet effective precautions like wearing long-sleeved clothing and using mosquito repellent.

Defense Strategy: DOH Reinforces "5S" Approach

To address the escalating threat, the DOH is reinforcing the "5S" approach as a key defense strategy. This strategy involves actively searching for and destroying mosquito breeding sites, practicing self-protection measures, seeking early medical advice, conducting fogging in high-risk areas, and prioritizing hydration to strengthen the body's resilience against the disease.
