Despite his passing, one of the nation's OPM favorites, Hajji Alejandro, will always be remembered for his songs.

Known as the "Original Kilabot ng Kolehiyala," Hajji Alejandro left a lasting legacy during the heyday of Original Pilipino Music (OPM) with his poignant songs and silky voice.

Alejandro, a trailblazer in the 1970s and 1980s, produced a number of timeless hits that still have an impact on Filipino music fans today. Five of his best songs that shaped his career are listed below:

1. "Nakapagtataka"

Written by fellow OPM legend Jim Paredes, "Nakapagtataka" became one of Alejandro’s signature songs. A poignant ballad about love slipping away despite one’s efforts, the song’s simple yet emotional melody and heartfelt lyrics struck a chord with listeners.

The song remains a favorite at karaoke sessions and tribute shows, a testament to its enduring emotional pull.

2. "Tag-Araw... Tag-Ulan"

With its poetic lyrics and metaphoric take on the seasons of love, this ballad showcased Alejandro’s vocal control and emotive style.

The song's title, which translates to "Summer... Rainy Season," reflects the ups and downs of romantic relationships, making it another classic in his emotional repertoire.

3. "May Minamahal"

Known for its simplicity and sincerity, "May Minamahal" is a gentle, romantic tune that highlights Alejandro’s more tender side. Its straightforward lyrics about the joy of loving someone resonated strongly with audiences, and the song is often included in wedding playlists and serenades to this day.

4. "Panakip Butas"

This soulful ballad, whose title translates to "stopgap" or "rebound," tells the painful story of someone who realizes they were just a temporary replacement in a failed relationship. Its relatable theme and Alejandro’s expressive delivery made it one of his most beloved and requested songs. It remains a staple in OPM love song playlists.

5. "Kay Ganda ng Ating Musika"

This uplifting anthem won the grand prize at the first Metro Manila Popular Music Festival (Metropop) in 1978. Composed by Ryan Cayabyab and interpreted by Alejandro, the song became a defining statement of pride in Filipino music. Its celebratory tone and patriotic message helped solidify OPM’s identity during a transformative era.
