The Department of Health (DOH) in the Philippines has dismissed viral social media claims about an alleged international health emergency, reassuring the public that there is no credible evidence to support the rumors. The false reports suggested that hospitals and crematories in China were overwhelmed by a surge of diseases such as influenza A, HMPV, mycoplasma pneumoniae, and COVID-19. The DOH, along with the Chinese Embassy in the Philippines, has labeled these claims as “fake news.”

Misinformation Debunked

The DOH issued an official statement on Friday clarifying that the circulating social media posts have no factual basis. “Wala itong kumpirmasyon mula sa binanggit na bansa o sa World Health Organization (WHO),” the department said, emphasizing that no official sources, including the WHO, have validated the reports. The Chinese Embassy also weighed in, calling the viral claims baseless. Despite these statements, the rumors had generated unnecessary concern among the public.

Surveillance Systems in Place

The DOH reassured Filipinos that the country’s disease surveillance systems remain fully operational. As an active member of the World Health Organization’s International Health Regulations (IHR) network, the Philippines is continuously monitoring potential health threats. The DOH emphasized that it is actively verifying all health-related information to ensure the public receives only accurate updates.

“Ang mga disease surveillance systems ng Pilipinas ay nasa lugar at gumagana,” the DOH affirmed, stressing that the department is committed to keeping the public informed about any legitimate health risks.

The Need for Caution in Sharing Information

The DOH also urged the public to be cautious when sharing health-related information online. Misinformation can cause unnecessary panic and confusion, which may hinder public health efforts. “Huwag tayong magpakalat ng maling impormasyon at kalituhan,” the department cautioned, advising people to rely only on trusted sources like the DOH and WHO.
