Northern Mindanao has taken the lead in Mindanao for the most number of active free internet hotspots, according to the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT).
During an economic briefing, DICT Region 10 Director Sittie Rahma Alawi reported that the region currently hosts 1,218 internet hotspots through the government’s Free Wi-Fi for All Program, surpassing Caraga Region with 742 and Davao Region with 684.
Alawi said the expansion will continue by the end of the year following President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive to connect all public schools, in coordination with the Department of Education (DepEd).
She added that the Basilan, Sulu, and Tawi-Tawi island provinces are also being prioritized under the National Broadband Program, a joint effort between the Philippine government and Japan to improve connectivity in remote and underserved areas.
Empowering MSMEs Through Better Connectivity
Improved digital infrastructure has begun to fuel economic growth in Northern Mindanao, particularly among micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
According to Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Region 10 Director Ruel Paclipan, the region’s stronger internet access has helped businesses embrace e-commerce platforms, boosting productivity and competitiveness.
“The integration of better internet services has encouraged local entrepreneurs to expand their reach online and access wider markets,” Paclipan said, noting that this growth has also strengthened the region’s P1-trillion economy, which recorded a 6.0 percent growth rate in 2024, based on data from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).
Logistics and E-Commerce Industries on the Rise
The expanding digital network has also benefited the logistics sector. Ninja Van Philippines, a leading logistics provider, now covers 95 percent of Mindanao’s transport routes, excluding Basilan, due to the rise in e-commerce demand.
“Those who can deliver consistently across Mindanao will be the ones to thrive as digital demand accelerates,” said Vin Perez, Ninja Van’s Country Head.
Meanwhile, Shell Lubricants Philippines is also developing flagship services for logistics operators, aligning with the region’s growing role in Mindanao’s evolving e-commerce economy.
