Patikul, Sulu will soon have a leisure traveler rest area, according to the Department of Tourism (DOT), which cited the province's "readiness for tourism."
The tourist rest area (TRA) is a hallmark program of the DOT, providing key attractions with a one-stop shop where visitors may rest, use clean bathrooms, and buy local items.
Following the groundbreaking ceremony, Secretary Frasco signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the Sulu provincial government, the Municipality of Patikul, and the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA) to formally establish the partnership for the construction of Sulu's soon-to-be rest area.
What to expect
A pasalubong (memorabilia store) and information kiosks will be available at the Patikul TRA, which is situated close to the provincial capital.
In order to address religious sensitivities and meet the unique needs of the province, the Patikul TRA will incorporate a musalla, or Muslim prayer space.
To further reduce its impact on the environment and conserve resources, it will have sustainable features, including solar power and a rainwater collection system.
Uniquely beautiful island
DOT Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco proposes the opening of the Tourist Rest Area as a way to boost the local economy and give exposure for the stunning island.
“The establishment of a Tourist Rest Area here evinces the commitment of the Marcos administration to support the momentum of growth for your province," Frasco said.
“What sets Sulu apart is its distinct ability to offer experiences from nowhere else, the deep-rooted traditions passed on through generations, the centuries-old artistry evident in Pis Siyabit weaving, and the intricate culinary heritage of the Tausug people. These are what make Sulu an exceptional destination for both local and international tourists,” Frasco added.
