In a strong message delivered during the latest episode of "Basta Dabawenyo," Davao City Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte addressed the urgent issue of illegal structures in watershed areas. He made it clear that water is an invaluable resource meant for all citizens and warned those encroaching on these protected zones to take action before the government steps in.

“Water is a precious resource for everyone,” Duterte emphasized, underlining the city's dedication to ensuring clean and safe water for all Dabawenyos. His comments reflect a commitment to preserving the city's vital watersheds, which play a crucial role in maintaining water supply.

A Call to Action

Mayor Duterte’s tone was unambiguous as he urged violators to act responsibly. He remarked, “Building in these areas is a selfish act that jeopardizes the welfare of the community.” By encouraging individuals to self-demolish their illegal constructions, he aims to prioritize public interest over personal gain.

This stance highlights the local government's determination to safeguard Davao's environment and water resources. Duterte reinforced that the administration will take necessary actions to protect these vital areas, stressing the importance of community involvement in conservation efforts.

 Educational Outreach Initiatives

To further support this cause, the Watershed Management Council (WMC) is actively engaging local communities through education and outreach programs. These initiatives are designed to raise awareness about the critical role of watersheds and the responsibilities that come with living in proximity to these areas.

The WMC collaborates with barangay leaders and tribal representatives to share knowledge about the importance of maintaining watershed health. Workshops and seminars led by experts from the WMC, City Planning and Development Office, and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources focus on proper land use and the guidelines for protecting these essential zones.
