Historic Dugong Sighting in Sarangani Bay Marks Major Conservation Milestone

Sarangani Bay witnessed its first-ever sighting of a dugong on July 31, 2024. The momentous discovery was reported by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) through the Protected Area Management Office of Sarangani Bay Protected Seascape (PAMO-SBPS) in Brgy. Daliao, Maasim. The sighting follows local residents' reports of dugong trails in the area, marking the first documented presence of the species in Daliao, despite frequent community sightings.

Ecological Significance

Dugongs, colloquially known as "sea cows," are critical to marine ecosystems. According to the Marine Wildlife Watch of the Philippines (MWWP), these herbivores are essential for maintaining the health of seagrass meadows, which they graze on. Their feeding activities contribute to nutrient cycling and bolster marine biodiversity. The recent sighting in Sarangani Bay underscores the region's ecological value and highlights the crucial role of preserving seagrass habitats. The presence of dugongs is a positive indicator of marine health and ecological balance.

Conservation Achievements and Community Involvement

The sighting represents a significant victory in ongoing conservation initiatives. Dugongs face numerous threats, including entanglement in fishing gear and habitat loss. However, their protection under DENR Administrative Order 2019-09 and DENR Administrative Order No. 55, along with Republic Act 9147, reflects the progress in conservation efforts. This historic observation is a testament to the effectiveness of these measures and the importance of community engagement. Local residents have played an instrumental role in reporting dugong sightings and aiding in conservation efforts. The collaboration between conservationists and the community highlights the successful impact of joint efforts in safeguarding marine biodiversity.
