A recent plebiscite in Tupi, South Cotabato, has resulted in the creation of Barangay Juan-Loreto Tamayo, marking a significant administrative development for the municipality.

Barangay Juan-Loreto Tamayo, named after the late parents of Mayor Romeo Tamayo, garnered overwhelming support in the plebiscite, with 96.3% of voters casting their ballots in favor. The new barangay will be formed from territories currently part of barangays Cebuano, Linan, and Miasong, making it the 16th barangay in Tupi and the 200th in South Cotabato.

Environmental Concerns and Advocacy

However, amidst celebrations, concerns have been raised by environmental advocates, including the Save Mt. Matutum Protected Landscape (SMMPL). They fear the establishment of Barangay Juan-Loreto Tamayo within the 15,600-hectare Mt. Matutum Protected Landscape (MMPL) could lead to increased human activity, potentially threatening the area's ecological balance.

Issues such as unauthorized land sales, illegal constructions, and business proliferation within the protected landscape have prompted calls for legislative oversight under Republic Act 11038 (E-NIPAS).

Moving Forward

As Tupi moves forward with the creation of Barangay Juan-Loreto Tamayo, balancing developmental aspirations with environmental preservation will be critical. The coming months are expected to involve continued dialogue and proactive measures to ensure that the new barangay contributes positively to the municipality's growth while safeguarding South Cotabato's natural heritage.
